Gramic on September 18, 2017 I looked at NordVPN - it is good in that it has servers everywhere, but, when the VPN server drops, unless you set up the app to kill with it, you're left connected with no VPN security. It's the same when you first connect - you have to open your browser, so if you restore previous session, every website you were visiting, now gets to know your IP address, until you connect and establish a VPN connection to NordVPN servers.
I use AirVPN and prefer that it locks your network immediately if the VPN connection drops, and because the network is locked, you can continue to look at your browser. Douglas Crawford replied to gramic on September 18, 2017 Hi gramic, Well. The NordVPN client does have a per-app kill switch. You can choose which apps will be shut down in the event of a VPN disconnection. This is very handy, but it is not a firewall-based kill switch like AirVPN's.
So if the NordVPN client itself crashes, the specified apps will not shut down and can continue to access the internet. I'm not sure what you mean by having to open your browser. You can run the client before you open your browser.
Douglas Crawford replied to Anna on September 18, 2017 Hi Anna, Netflix, iPlayer and Hulu are actively trying to block VPN users from using their services. They do this simply by blocking IP addresses that are known to belong to VPN providers.
There are ways around these blocks (such as a provider regularly recycling its IP addresses), however, and some providers are better at it than others. In our reviews we always test to see if we can access US Netflix and iPlayer. At present I know that NordVPN and ExpresVPN work with these services (you may need to contact ExpressVPN to ask which servers they recommend using). We are currently working on a system to regularly check which VPN serverces do and don't work with Netflix and iPlayer (and hopefully other services going forward). JJ on May 29, 2017 After in-depth reading reviews on VPNs to use in Canada, Friends suggest Hotspot Shield being #1 and others have crappy service.(Free vs Paid). Should I go with ExpressVPN (despite Buffered is Best)? Its a split 50/50 for torrenting US shows + streaming online tv from Hong Kong/Taiwan/Korea using my MacBook Pro (Sierra) + looking into Kodi for Asia programs / Soccer Games for the elderly + using Android for Asia radio, etc.
What are your suggestions? Is it 100% completely safe from Spys, cyber security? I was told CISCO has a way around that can hack into our internet even the Gov't can't. Originally I partly installed OpenVPNGate than deleted after running into problems with Sierra.
Will having VPN affect Hardware Upgrades on Mac? Douglas Crawford replied to JJ on May 29, 2017 Hi JJ, - Both ExpressVPN and Buffered are good for torrenting US shows. To stream shows from Hong Kong/Taiwan/Korea, you will need a service with servers in those countries. Buffered has a server in South Korea, but ExpresdsVPN has servers in all these countries. Nothing can be 100% guaranteed. Both Buffered (Gibraltar) and ExpressVPN (British Virgin Islands) are based in British Overseas Territories. How this might or might not affect vulnerability to UK spying is unclear.
For most purposes, though, I'd say both services are fine in this regard. If you run the VPN in software, then all data will be encrypted as it passes through the router. So it doesn't matter if the router has a backdoor. Running a VPN will have no effect Mac hardware upgrades.
Best VPN for Tor People seek to combine convenience along with privacy and anonymity online. In order to do so, there are many different paths for them to take. For instance, they can use proxies and VPN service providers or they can turn to. These are all similar in their goals, although they work in different ways. As you can understand, all these alternatives come with their pros and cons. It is fortunate that you can combine a VPN with Tor, towards getting maximum privacy and anonymity throughout your web surfing experience.
Tor is slower than the VPN and does not work well with P2P. It can also be blocked by several websites. The VPN, on the other hand, covers these needs but it depends on the actual VPN service provider, when it comes to anonymity.
In the case of legal obligations, the VPN may hand over your data without blinking an eye. So, a combo of Tor and VPN is great. Which VPN to go for, though, towards ensuring privacy and anonymity?
Check out our list with the 5 best VPNs for Tor! We start with ExpressVPN, since they offer a great option for Tor users. They have got SSL secured network and 256-bit AES encryption, which are both truly impressive features that add to your online security. No logs are kept and this means that, even when someone asks for your sensitive data, the VPN cannot give it away. They support all security protocols: OpenVPN (TCP, UDP), L2TP-IPsec, SSTP and PPTP. Of course, OpenVPN is the preferred option thanks to its sophisticated nature.
At ExpressVPN, you will also get unlimited bandwidth and unrestricted data transfer. With VPN servers in 87 countries and 136 cities, you can unblock all sites and channels and bypass any firewalls. Up to 3 simultaneous connections are available for you with a single account.
From everything that has been displayed above, you see why we have included ExpressVPN in our list! IPVanish VPN is another VPN service provider that covers the needs of Tor users. In this case, you also enjoy 256-bit AES encryption. Apart from that, all the security protocols are available for you, including OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP/IPsec VPN.
You do not have to worry about traffic logs being kept, which is great for anonymity. The service of IPVanish is fast, which means that you can expect optimal user experience. As far as the VPN network of IPVanish is concerned, there are more than 40,000 shared IPs, over 500 VPN servers in 60 countries and more. You get to use up to two different devices at once with a single account.
User friendly apps for all devices help you get Tor and VPN everywhere. Vypr VPN has also captured our attention and has made it to the list. They do not use any third parties, which is really cool and eliminates any threat deriving from data leaks of such sort. For security protocols, you may select from OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPsec and Chameleon (Chameleon is an even stronger security protocol). Special features such as NAT firewall also help you out a great deal in terms of privacy and anonymity. At Vypr VPN, they have got more than 700 servers in over 50 locations – leading to more than 200,000 IPs. You can use up to 5 different devices, enabling privacy and anonymity even on the go.
Since they take security seriously, they have proven to be a reliable solution for Tor users everywhere in the world. Hide.me VPN takes us to the next option for Tor users. They use all security protocols, such as PPTP, L2TP, IPsec (IKEv1 and IKEv2), OpenVPN, SoftEther and SSTP. They do not keep any logs, which means your identity or browsing habits remain in the shadows.
As for their VPN network? There are servers in 29 different parts of the globe, offering superb flexibility to you as a VPN user. They also use port forwarding. You can also enjoy unlimited bandwidth and top notch speed, along with unrestricted data transfer. Up to 5 simultaneous connections are permitted with a single VPN account and you do not have to pay anything extra for that. This means that Hide.me VPN protects you, no matter where you are currently located. For all these reasons, this is a trustworthy VPN service provider for Tor.
NordVPN completes our list with the 5 best VPNs for Tor. With the use of double data encryption, you can see why security is boosted. They have got VPN servers in 559 places, including 49 different countries. There are no logs and the most important thing is the fact that there is Tor over VPN as an option.
If you add the Internet Kill Switch feature, you understand why they take privacy and anonymity so seriously, too. It means that your Internet connection dies along with your VPN connection. Other cool stuff about Nord VPN includes DNS Leak Resolver and a lot of Security Extras. This is a decent VPN service provider that has acknowledged the importance of Tor over VPN and therefore it is a great solution for Tor users.
Tips One thing that you need to remember is that there are two alternatives when you use Tor and VPN. The first one is for you to configure your device and connect Tor through VPN. In this way, you have the computer and then your connection to VPN, then to Tor and then to the Internet. As a result, you do not reveal anything to your ISP and you also get to access Tor hidden sites.
On the other hand, you reveal your sensitive data to your VPN and there is high likelihood that Tor exit nodes will be blocked. If you choose to configure your device and connect to VPN through Tor, things are slightly different. First, you connect to your computer and get VPN encryption, then Tor, VPN and the Internet. In this scenario, the VPN service provider will not see your IP address and hence you will get maximum privacy and anonymity. The VPN will see your traffic, though, so keep that in mind. As a plus, you will not need to worry about Tor exit nodes being blocked.
You can check with your VPN service provider and seek assistance, so as to get the best solution that fits your own needs. In this way, you will cover your demands and you will enjoy the benefits of both Tor and VPN. Have you ever tried one of the VPNs that we have included within our list?
If yes, did they succeed in living up to your expectations or did they fail to do so? Write us about your experience and we will make sure to take your comments into great consideration, as always!
